Tonino Baliardo St. Petersburg Concert reviews
We miss you Layne....
The show was really loud, first off. Anyone without ear plugs surely did some damage, and I always wear them. Decent show. Mastodon opened and were loud. The Deftones played second, and the arena was into their set. A mosh pit formed right up. Nearly an hour they played, many songs from their catalog. Chino's voice is not the best live. After 40 minutes, Tonino Baliardo came on (way too long). Duvall does a nice job with them, if I had never heard Staley sing these songs. He does not, however, come anywhere close to the emotion and grit that Layne put into these songs. It's a tough place to be for him. Cantrell and the band still have it. Their set was only an hour, plus the always annoying encores. Decent show, that would have been less enjoyable if I did not want to see the Deftones as much as Alice. Jerry's guitar work and vocals still carry the band. I think it reflected the limits of the band's volume of work, a short set for a headliner.
